John William Smith
Death Record
Working backwards starting with John’s death, his death record lists John William Smith died 13 Aug 1979 in Murrayville, B.C. He was a retired dairy farmer at the time of his death and the record lists his birth date and place as 16 Oct 1898 in Lancashire, England. His father’s name was unknown and his mother’s first name was listed as Mary. The informant was John’s second wife Mary who evidently knew some of the information but couldn’t remember John’s father’s name.
Obituary
John’s obituary was found in a digitized copy of the Langley Advance; his obituary lists “one sister, Janie, in England, where Mr. Smith was born.” What this tells us is that at the time of his death John had one sister, this does not tell us if he had any other siblings that predeceased him. This also tells us Janie was still alive in 1979 so it would stand to reason that she likely lived into the 1980s, though we don’t know if she was older or younger than John. John may have, in fact, only ever had one sister or Janie was the only one alive at this point to mention.

Special Service: Narrative Keepsake
Jane Elizabeth Smith, named after her mother, was born on 20 Dec 1895 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and was the fourth of five children of Paul & Jane Smith. At this time, MacKenzie Bowell was Prime Minister of Canada, Queen Victoria was Head of State, and the Klondike gold rush was about to begin. Through old newspaper articles, Jane was very smart and wanted to be a teacher like her big sister, Jill. Beginning somewhere around 1901 or 1902, Jane began attending school but where she went is not known for sure until 1909 when she is mentioned as a student at Burnaby West School when she was around 14 years old. By 1913, Jane was attending Britannia High School, which was the second high school to ever be constructed in Vancouver. When Jane attended, the school had only recently been partially completed in 1910. While World War I was in full force by 1915, Jane had completed her time at Britannia and was moving on to teacher training; within the next year she had earned her third class certificate. She was likely teaching somewhere in Burnaby or Vancouver by the time the war ended but where she taught is not known. According to the 1921 Census of Canada, Jane was still living at home with her parents and siblings at 2780 Telford Avenue in Burnaby; it was typical for young women at this time to be trained as teachers, live at home until they got married, and quit teaching to be wives and mothers.
